Introduction
Before writing about The Rock Of Ages, it is necessary to have a complete knowledge about rocks. It is this knowledge that gives the necessary insight, foresight and understanding of why God is called The Rock Of Ages.
The explanations help make us understand the importance of rock and its uses in the worship of God. We start with the characteristics of rock.
The Characteristics Of Rock
The following are the characteristics of rock:
- Hardness
Rocks are very hard. They are not easily broken.
- Strength
Rocks are very strong. In fact, rocks are the strongest material in nature, before man produced metals. Even the strongest iron and metals of today were made from rock.
- Durability
Rocks are very durable. They last for so many years. Other materials may decompose but a rock remains.
- Constancy
Rocks do not normally change their nature, unless some external forces act on them.
- Toughness
When different materials are robbed one against the other, they easily wear off. But a rock retains it hardness and strength, while wears away other material by friction.
- Tenacity
This is the ability to hold fast (firm) despite changing situations and varying influence.
- Resistance To Change
Rocks do not easily change their nature or shape when placed in different environments or solutions like water, mud etc.
- Crystillation
This is the ability of a liquid or gas to change into a solid matter.
- Immovability
Rocks are immovable because of their great size and weight. Even in the modern times, it is not yet possible to move huge rocks. They must be first broken into pieces and carried thus over long distances.
- Foundation
Rocks serve as foundation stones or corner stones which are able to support and bear up buldings, structures etc.
- Silence
Observe all rocks. They are always silent. They do not make noise, despite the great load they support.
- Composition
At the granular level, rocks are composed of grains of minerals. The grains are homogeneous solids formed from a chemical compound that is arranged in an orderly manner. The aggregates minerals are held together by chemical bonds.
- Transformation (Evolution)
With time, rocks transform from one type into another. This is evolution.
The Spiritual Meanings Of Rock

- Rock Of Ages
God is Rock Of Ages because He exists from everlasting to everlasting. He maintains the entire creation by a fraction of His power. Besides, the ups and downs of life do not wear Him down.
- God Is The Foundation Of The Universe.
It is the Spirit (God) that animates and dominates all things. Everything is like a tool in the hand of God. He is the sure foundation is Truth. The same truth is spirit and it is life. (Peter is the foundation of the church.)
- Jesus is the corner stone. The corner stone does the work of a pillar. A pillar is usually one, but it supports many structures. Without the pillar, in the form of framework, buldings and organizations cannot stand.
Jesus is the Everlasting King of the Universe. He has so many responsibilities on his shoulder. God testifies of this fact in many parts of the Bible.
Prophet Isaiah stated it vividly, saying:
6 For unto us a Child is born,
Unto us a Son is given;
And the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called
Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
7 Of the increase of His government and peace
There will be no end,
Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom,
To order it and establish it with judgment and justice
From that time forward, even forever.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.
Isaiah 9:6-7
Jesus testifies:
5 "I am the vine , you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. 7 If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. 8 By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.
John 15:5-8
Apostle John confirms:
'These things says He who is holy, He who is true, "He who has the key of David, He who opens and no one shuts, and shuts and no one opens":
Revelation 3:7
As the man who saw God face to face,
I bear witness that all the above testimonies are true; the same is loving-kindness and everlasting.
- God is Spirit.
It is the same spirit that became all things.
4 There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit . 5 There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. 6 And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. 7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: 8 for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit , 9 to another faith by the same Spirit , to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit , 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.
1 Corinthians 12:4-11
'Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit ,'
Says the LORD of hosts.
Zechariah 4:6
1 "Listen to Me, you who follow after righteousness,
You who seek the LORD:
Look to the rock from which you were hewn,
And to the hole of the pit from which you were dug.
2 Look to Abraham your father,
And to Sarah who bore you;
For I called him alone,
And blessed him and increased him."
Isaiah 51:1-2

- To make an altar powerful, use twelve and three candles. For details read <……>
